SLAC SLAM!
SLAC SLAM is a fun speech competition where contestants give a 3-minute talk about their research to engage a live audience. Winners receive cash prizes from $750 to $3,000 and can go on to compete in more competitions. But most importantly, the preparation for and experience of SLAM is a great way for our early career scientists to gain skills in public speaking and effective scientific communication.

FAQs
SLAC SLAM happens yearly, usually in September. Look for flyers and announcements each summer to learn more.
SLAC may also occasionally host BARS, the Bay Area Research SLAM that happens each October/November.
Participants are researchers (scientists and engineers) that have earned their Ph.D. within 6 years of the SLAM (eg. Ph.D. Jan 2020 and later to participate in 2026 SLAC SLAM). Stanford postdocs at SLAC, associated with a SLAC project or department, are eligible!
Sign-ups run approximately from June through July each year. Look for flyers, emails from your management chain, and notifications on slack and SLAC Today.
Yes, the SLAM Organizing Committee solicits coaches, e.g., past participants, communication specialists, senior scientists and/or faculty, to conduct practice and coaching sessions in the lead-up to SLAM. More details will be shared with those who have signed up to participate.
